Thelma L. McGary, 90, passed quietly from this life on Monday, January 31, 2022, in Homeland Center in Harrisburg. Born in Highspire, the daughter of Earl and Minnie (Wueschinski) Shellenberger, she lived in the Steelton/Harrisburg area and Lancaster before moving to New Cumberland in 2002. Thelma received an A. A. degree in paralegal studies from the University of Pennsylvania. She worked as a paralegal for Mikus Law Associates for 8 years before retiring 22 years ago. Thelma loved to read, knit and crochet in her free time as a means of relaxation.
Thelma was preceded in death by her two sisters, Margaret E. Neidich and Bertha C. Kegel. Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Daniel W. McGary; sons, David L. Hoch (Carmen) of West Chester, Timothy L. Hoch (Kathleen Achor) of West Pawlett, VT, Thomas L. Hoch (Andrea Barberio) of Swarthmore; a daughter, Amy L. Bennett (Thomas) of Annapolis, Maryland, and a stepson, Jeffrey McGary (Cynthia) of Lancaster. Also surviving are grandchildren, David Hoch, Teresa Hoch, Jack Hoch, Jean Hoch, Ivy Hoch, Brad McGary and Patrick McGary; great grandchildren, Bronson McGary and Dean McGary; and nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated in First Church of the Brethren, 219 Hummel Street, Harrisburg, PA 07104, on Saturday, March 5, 2022 with a welcome and remembering hour starting at 10:30am with the Pastor, Josiah Ludwick officiating. Inurnment will follow in Highspire Cemetery (1:30pm), all are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the YMCA of Greater Harrisburg Violence Intervention Prevention Program, or the Living Witness Fund of Harrisburg First Church of the Brethren.
